| History of loveline muzik 1987 – The incarnation of Loveline Disco based in Cumberland, Portmore with Donovan Nathan & Officer Wayne Gentles at the helm. Robinhood is commissioned as the original selector as well as Donovan’s then 14 year old cousin Wayne who at the time lives in Brooklyn, NY. At this time, Donovan accumulated all of the equipment due to his bi-weekly travels to the U.S. for business purposes. Numerous soundmen would request he bring back various sound gear. It reached a point where Donovan had so much gear unpaid for that all that was needed was a mixer and to have cabinets built. At that time Rudolph, then technician for Love Vibration, was requisitioned for the job. Donovan and Gentles then put their heads and pockets together to cut dubplates for the new machine. At that time, Donovan being quite well known in the sound community, and Gentles being quite influential in said arena begin to promote dances in the Cumberland area as well as the Kingston community of Sandy Park. 1988- Mikey White, former selector of Love Vibration then joins the fold as Loveline’s primary selector. Loveline gains popularity in the sound arena due to regular “juggling” dances in Cumberland, Gregory Park, Waterfort, Stony Hill Sandy Park and other areas of Jamaica as well as monumental wins over sounds such as Classique, Super Rock, Super Saint, Tyrant and many others… ”Wi start di ball a roll!” 1989- Due to personal differences, Donovan and Gentles part ways as business partners and Donovan retains full ownership. After playing in Stony Hill one particular night Loveline is robbed of it’s dubplates by armed gunmen while the few ”box boys” were left to pack up the sound and Loveline is brought to NY momentarily where it is based in a Brooklyn club, then named Splendor Heights. Theories of the culprits run abound, however no one in particular is pinpointed for the crime. The sound’s popularity increases due to this migration. Loveline is playing regularly with some of NY’s popular sounds of the day such as Star Tone, Sir Vic Jr., Volume 1, Maximum and several others. Shortly after, Loveline returns to Jamaica, but still plays NY on a regular basis. 1991- In light of illness suffered by Donovan, and Wayne leaving NY for college, Loveline endures lengthy hiatus. Playing sporadically, the focus of the sound is somewhat deflected causing dates to be few and far between. The sound makes brief showings where other family members who have musical interests take helm such as Mark and Bully who owned Computer Mix from Queens, NY, Ian Frass, now chief selector of Riddim Force in Miami as well as Icon, present selector of King Agony. 2000- Wayne returns to NY where he and cousin Richie Gunz decide to revive Loveline Muzik on a mission to restore the sound to it’s stellar position in the music game. RICHIE GUNZ GIVES LOVELINE MUZIK A "SHOT IN THE ARM" BY GOING ON A DUB CUTTING FRENZY WHILE WAYNE reCOVERS AND RECOLLECTS MANY OF THE PRICELESS STOLEN DUBPLATES THAT WERE TAKEN. THE RESULT IS THE UNPARRALLELED QUALITY AND SELECTION OF LOVELINE MUZIK'S CATALOG. WE'RE BACK! The road is rough but the family endures. |
